Fingerprint Project by Kevin Van Aelst

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 03:55 AM PST

Kevin Van Aelst's portfolio consists of some of the most creative work I have seen in a long time. While there is so much work of his worthy to be featured I chose to focus in particular on his fingerprint project where he recreates fingerprints out of common day-to-day objects. Probably tedious and time consuming but very cool indeed.

My color photographs consist of common artifacts and scenes from everyday life, which have been rearranged, assembled, and constructed into various forms, patterns, and illustrations. The images aim to examine the distance between the 'big picture' and the 'little things' in life—the banalities of our daily lives, and the sublime notions of identity and existence. While the depictions of information--such as an EKG, fingerprint, map or anatomical model--are unconventional, the truth and accuracy to the illustrations are just as valid as more traditional depictions. This work is about creating order where we expect to find randomness, and also hints that the minutiae all around us is capable of communicating much larger ideas.

Definitely make sure to swing by his portfolio for more and let me know what you think via twitter!

Case Study: NINE by Perttu Murto

Posted: 16 Jan 2011 07:11 PM PST

The wallpaper of the week is an artwork created by Perttu Murto for the UUtheory NINE contest. We really like the design and asked Perttu if he could send us a case study showing the process of creating it. He was super kind and send us a 10 step making of in which we can understand a bit more about how it was done.

This artwork is originally made for UUtheory NINE contest, but it's also part of the desktopography 2010 exhibition. I wanted to create something mystic and scifi. I got this idea to make a big iron nine with apocalypse scenery. I worked this with the 3D artists Sami Kuronen, who made the 3d model of the 9.
